Burlington, Vt.- Tara Guertin let her friend borrow her SUV for a road-trip from Connecticut to Vermont to go skiing with friends. The group ended up getting lost and was guided by Google’s Waze GPS on top of a frozen Lake Champlain. Reportedly it was very dark, rainy and foggy, so the driver and its occupants didn’t realize they were actually being steered right off a boat launch. Guertin initially thought it was a glitch in Waze’s system but found after repluggin in same address, she received the same faulty directions. Thankfully, the driver and its passengers were able to escape the sinking vehicle in time. The vehicle was finally pulled from the bottom of the lake a week later.
Google’s spokesperson told the Free Press that “It’s impossible to comment here without seeing the user’s driving file, and we haven’t received permission to do so.” They also added that drivers “keep their eyes on the road and use all environmental information available to them to make the best decisions as they drive.”
